Now the author of the Listful Thinking Using Lists to be mora Productive, Highly Successful and Less Stressed, Rizzo helps others hack their to-do lists so they can thrive in their careers and life. We spoke with her about the ultimate tips and tricks for using our to-do lists to get more done, too.1. Write your to-do list the day before.First things first Every day before leaving work, make your to-do list for the next day. Rizzo told Swirled that this is the best way to set yourself up for success.Before I leave every night, I walk through whats going to happen the next day, Rizzo said. So I set an intention What do I actually need to get done?Rizzo said this is the best way to make sure that the next day doesnt get away from you. Youll be able to come into the office in the morning and know exactly what needs to get done.2. Make sure you have all the resources you need to complete the tasks on your list.Dont put anything on it that you dont have the time or the resources to do, Rizzo said. Whether that means you need to wait for a kollektiv member to get back to you with data before you write a report, or you need to break a bigger project down into smaller bite-size tasks, make sure everything on that to-do list can be done that day.Pro TipConsider making a list of things that you need in order to get other tasks done. Then tackle that list when you have time, maybe at the very start of the day. If youre able to find the resource you need to get a bigger task done, then that bigger task can be added to your to-do list that day or the next.3. Set a time limit for tasks.Building off the mentality that you need to make sure all items on the list can be done that day, make sure you physically have the time to complete everything, too.Sometimes we say oh this will just take five minutes, and then 25 minutes later, were still working on that task, Rizzo said. I encourage people to time themselves. This comes from my background in TV. Everything was very defined and there were a lot of deadlines, so if it needed to be one minute and 30 seconds, then it was one minute and 30 seconds. I knew exactly how long it was, so being able to have that ingrained - how long tasks actually take you to do - is really helpful.When you can stay on time with your tasks, youll be mo re productive and wont be wasting any time. Rizzo suggests setting a timer on your phone or an alarm so you know when a task must be completed.4. Keep separate lists for everything.If you just keep one long to-do list for everything in your life, it could get very overwhelming. Instead, Rizzo said to do a brain dump of everything you need to do and then organize it into separate lists.For instance, I do a work list and a home list, she said. It could be on the same piece of paper, but its just not all jumbled together on the same list.If youre using the same sheet of paper, try keeping all work-related tasks on the left and all home-related tasks on the right. Rizzo said this helps your brain decipher whats what, rather than having to pick what you need to do from a long list. You can even get more granular with separate lists for everything in your life beyond just what you need to do, like grocery shopping or packing for a trip.5. Know whats a priority on the list and what isnt.It can be difficult to determine whats a priority every day when theres so much that needs to get done. Instead, Rizzo said to think about the top three things that you need to do and consider that good enough. From there, add other smaller tasks that support those three big ones. Knowing what requires laser-focus will keep you in line with your priorities, and will prevent you from wasting time on tasks that are really just not that important.Pro TipWe can often get very distracted by emails during the workday. Instead of constantly checking your email and responding ASAP, only check your email once per hour. You should write this down on your to-do list. If necessary, block off an hour of time in the morning or afternoon and use it to respond to everything that came through while you were accomplishing another task.6. Apps and tools are great, but the old-fashioned way might be best.There are so many digital apps and tools that can be used to make a to-do list these days, but Rizzo is still a fan of pen and paper.I feel like writing it down on paper ingrains it into this is action mode, Rizzo said. If I write it down, I have to do it.Andstudieshave found that people actually remember things better when they write them down on paper, rather than when they type them on a laptop. Rizzo writes down her daily to-do list, and then uses apps and tools for other lists. It integrates with Gmail to show a pop-up to-do list that you can keep right there on your screen.7. Take back your inbox.Knowing how much time you spend every day reading, replying to and delet ing emails is important. Thats valuable time that you could be using to get stuff done at work and at home. Rizzo got to the point where she felt overwhelmed by everything and decided to hit the ultimate restart button.A few years ago, I gave myself 15 minutes and looked through my inbox to save some of the stuff or reply to things that were important, and then I just deleted everything else in order to start fresh, Rizzo said. I know its terrifying, but I wanted to start fresh and I knew if something was important and it mattered, it would come back to me. Somebody would follow up with me if they really needed to.This strategy might not be for everyone, so Rizzo told us that starting with a tool calledunroll.meis a good plan. That, of course, would mean cutting out radiation. If we could render our Geiger counters archaic and shrink the scale of our reactors and use an easier-to-come-by source of fuel, then wed have something truly utopian. Such a future may be within our grasp, thanks to the work of Leif Holmlid, a professor of atmospheric science in the Department of Chemistry at the University of Gothenburg. Forten years now, he has been researching ultra-dense deuterium. This fhigkeit fuel source is made from heavy hydrogen, which happens to be found in that plentiful stuff of our planet called water. After a while, Holmlid realized that the distance between the atoms of the ultra-dense stuff was rather close. So it was quite possible to easily start fusion in this werkstoff, he says. Holmlid then set about do ing just that, first in the theoretical world, then in the real. The result is a laser-fired fusion reactor that has already managed to produce more energy than it takes to run. In short, the technique involves putting deuterium in a high-pressure chamber so the ultra-dense material forms on the surface. When zapped with a laser for a few nanoseconds, the fusion process begins. The trick is timing the pulses of the laser with the production of deuterium, currently about ten times a second. Thats the main thing in the reactor. You dont have to do much more, says Holmlid.The initial laser process in ultra-dense deuterium. Image Leif Holmlid First attempts revealed that the particles coming out of the reactor were too fast to be coming from ordinary fusion. Further investigation revealed that the particles were not the typical neutrons, but muons. Muons decay much faster than neutrons, in 2.2 microseconds compared to a neutrons 1,000-second-long decay. That means they can easily be abs orbed by a simple wall. There is a risk with muons, says Holmid, You cant just neglect them. But the enclosure is much smaller than if you have neutrons. Another great advantage to the emission of muons is that, unlike neutrons, theyre charged, so they can be used to directly produce electricity. Just how, though, has not yet been determined. That is what we are going to investigate next, says Holmid. The reactor will likely use a so-called inverted cyclotron, a small magnetic device that makes a charge a circle. And harvesting the heat the reactor produces will be a mere technical matter. With the threat of radiation reduced to nearly nothing, Holmlids reactors neednt take up massive swaths of any municipality. They could be built small enough to power neighborhoods or even single homes. It doesnt seem that it will be small enough that you can have it in a car or a robot or something like that, he says. But in a house, yes. The ultra-dense deuterium reactor isnt the only one in dev elopment using heavy hydrogen. But those add tritium, which is not safe to handle at a large scale, says Holmid. It is usually believed you can measure and take care of radioactivity, but thats the not the case with tritium, he says. You can have lots of tritium around but you cannot measure it with any instrument, in the lab, or anywhere. Ultra-dense deuterium is some 100,000 times denser than water and thought to be denser than the stuff at the suns core. Research from the Institute of Naval Medicine found that overly tough bosses cause people to seek jobs elsewhere, to perform at a lower level, to decline promotions, and even to quit. Finally, a survey from Randstad Consulting showed that most employees would trade in their bosses for better ones rather than receive a $5,000 pay raise. People dont leave jobs they leave badeanstalt bosses.The thing is, nice bosses dont just prevent health and motivational problems among their employees they create massive benefits that hard-nosed bosses cant. A California State Long Beach study found that leaders who treat their teams fairly have far more cohesive and productive teams and that the individuals in those teams perform better. Research from the University of Virginia found that leaders who were considered self-sacrificing and helpful were viewed as especially inspirational and motivational and their employees were more hel pful to their colleagues and more committed to their teams.So, what exactly does a nice boss look like, and how does one pull this off without being a pushover? Lets find out.Theyre kind without being weakOne of the toughest things for leaders to master is kindness. Its a balancing act, and the key to finding balance is to recognize that true kindness is inherently strong- its direct and straightforward. Telling people the difficult truth they need to hear is much kinder than protecting them (or yourself) from a difficult conversation. This is weak. Also, true kindness doesnt come with expectations. Kindness is thin when you use it in a self-serving manner- people can see right through kindness when a kind leader has an agenda.Theyre strong without being harshStrength is an important quality in a leader. People will wait to see if a leader is strong before they decide to follow his or her lead or not. People need courage in their leaders. They need someone who can make difficult dec isions and watch over the good of the group. They need a leader who will stay the course when things get tough. People are far more likely to show strength themselves when their leader does the same.A lot of leaders mistake domineering, controlling, and otherwise harsh behavior for strength. They think that taking control and pushing people around will somehow inspire a loyal following. Strength isnt something you can force on people its something you earn by demonstrating it time and again in the face of adversity. Only then will people trust that they should follow you.Theyre confident, without being cockyWe gravitate to confident leaders because confidence is contagious, and it helps us to believe that there are great things in store. The trick, as a leader, is to make certain your confidence doesnt slip into arrogance and cockiness. Confidence is about passion and belief in your ability to make things happen, but when your confidence loses touch with reality, you begin to think you can do things you cant and have done things you havent. Suddenly its all about you. This arrogance makes you lose credibility.Great, confident leaders are mucksmuschenstill humble. They dont allow their accomplishments and position of authority to make them feel that theyre better than anyone else. As such, they dont hesitate to jump in and do the dirty work when needed, and they dont ask their followers to do anything they arent willing to do themselves.They stay positive, but remain realisticAnother major challenge that leaders face is finding the balance between keeping things positive and still being realistic. Think of a sailboat with three people aboard a pessimist, an optimist, and a great leader. Everything is going smoothly until the wind suddenly sours. The pessimist throws his hands up and complains about the wind the optimist sits back, saying that things will improve but the great leaders says, We can do this and he adjusts the sails and keeps the ship moving forwar d. The right combination of positivity and realism is what keeps things moving forward.Theyre role models, not preachersGreat leaders inspire trust and admiration through their actions, not just their words. Many leaders say that integrity is important to them, but great leaders walk their talk by demonstrating integrity every day. Harping on people all day long about the behavior you want to see has a tiny fraction of the impact you achieve by demonstrating that behavior yourself.Theyre willing to take a bullet for their peopleThe best leaders will do anything for their teams, and they have their peoples backs no matter what. They dont try to shift blame, and they dont avoid shame when they fail. Theyre never afraid to say, The buck stops here, and they earn peoples trust by backing them up. Great leaders also make it clear that they welcome challenges, criticism, and viewpoints other than their own. They know that an environment where people are afraid to speak up, offer insights, and ask good questions is destined for failure.They balance work and funThere are plenty of bosses out there who know how to have fun. Unfortunately, this is often at the expense of results. And for every boss out there who has a bit too much fun, theres one who doesnt know how to have any fun at all. It takes a kind, but balanced leader to know how to motivate and push employees to be their best but to also have the wherewithal to slow it down at the appropriate time in order to celebrate results and have fun. I completed my high school studies in Mumbai before deciding to pursue my undergraduate career in the US and live the American dream. ?? During my time here, I have notlage only discovered where my career interests lie but have also had the opportunity to experience it first hand at two of the leading companies in the world, one of them being United Technologies Corporation.My main interests lie in Supply Chain and Operations Management (SCM) and Financial Planning and Analysis (FPA), an d I strive hard each day to make a successful career out of it, or maybe run my own company down the line (who knows?). At Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI), I am a candidate in the Industrial Engineering program and will be graduating in December with a Bachelor of Science degree. Outside of school and work, I love watching American Football and playing European Football.What welches the reason you created your resume?I wanted to apply for an internship at Tesla, Inc. As you can imagine, the competition is very high and hence I needed a resume that would put me in front of other applicants. I believe that helped me do that. ??Wow How is working at Tesla?Working for Tesla has been an amazing yet challenging experience so far. The creative flexibility provided by management allows us to pursue relevant projects that we feel can bring about a change. Having such a direct impact on the production of cars is definitely something to be proud of. ??Unfortunately, you have to be 23 to get a Tesla Model S or Model X experience, however, I did get a chance to ride one and I was left in complete awe The self-driving function is smooth as silk and the 0-100 kmph in 2.28 seconds does not disappoint.Why did you choose ?I thought of stepping into the employers shoes for a moment and visualized how it would be to receive a stack full of resumes each day. I couldnt decipher how the employer would be able to actually connect with the candidate if they are just presented with a blurb of words. I wanted to do more than just that.
